Dr Joel Symonds is a Specialist Breast and Oncoplastic Surgeon based at The Strathfield Breast Centre. He offers expertise in the treatment of women with breast cancer and benign breast related conditions. He also treats male patients. At the Strathfield Breast Centre, Dr Symonds has access to onsite radiology, pathology and multidisciplinary breast cancer specialists. Dr Symonds was appointed by Professor Hugh Carmalt to take over his private practice upon retirement. He operates at Strathfield Private Hospital and Chris O’Brien Lifehouse.
Dr Symonds has extensive specialty training in breast surgery having completed three years of post-fellowship surgical training programs. He completed the two year Australian Post-fellowship training program at Westmead Breast Cancer Institute and Concord Repatriation General Hospital before training overseas in the United Kingdom. In the UK, Joel worked for the National Health Service as the Oncoplastic Breast Surgery Fellow at The Royal Liverpool University Hospital, Linda McCartney Breast Cancer Centre. There he gained comprehensive surgical experience in lumpectomy combined with breast reduction, implant based reconstruction, risk reduction surgery and lipomodelling.
